Virus-Like Particles (VLPs) are self-assembling structures that mimic viral shells but do not contain the genetic material required for replication, usually derived from viral proteins, and can be used as safe and effective vaccine platforms or drug delivery systems. The combination of oligonucleotides with VLPs can be used for a variety of purposes, including targeted drug delivery, immunotherapy or diagnostics. In addition, oligonucleotides can be designed to carry specific sequences that interact with cellular receptors, specific tissues or disease markers, allowing for precise targeting.

The splicing process usually involves oligonucleotides and VLPs that have been modified in advance to introduce functional groups that can form covalent or non-covalent bonds. Oligonucleotides can be chemically modified using a variety of reactive groups, while the VLP surface can be designed to display complementary reactive groups or specific binding motifs. When mixed together, the oligonucleotides and the reactive groups on the VLP can form a stable linkage leading to the conjugation of the oligonucleotide to the VLP.
